The Community Shield opens the English season: a single match between the Premier League champions and the FA Cup winners, at Wembley, a week before the opening weekend. It began in 1908 as the FA Charity Shield and took its present name in 2002, keeping its original purpose - the proceeds go to good causes. One rule sets it apart from everything else in the English calendar: if the scores are level there is no extra time, it goes straight to penalties. Ninety minutes and no more, which makes for a taut finish rather than a cautious one. Manchester United are the most successful club as of the 2024 edition. For the viewer it is the first proper look at the new year: reshaped squads, new signings starting, systems tried out in public. Kick-off is early afternoon on a Sunday in August, UK time.
