The Copa Chile is Chile's national cup, and what it gives its winner makes it far more than a trophy: a place in the Copa Libertadores. For a club that will not finish near the top of the league, it is a shorter route to the continent - and a Libertadores means travelling across five time zones over six months. The cup is open to first-division and second-division clubs as well as regional sides, which produces ties every year that the league could never offer: modest grounds, uneven pitches, and a top-flight club obliged to win somewhere it has never played.
