The Coupe de France is France's national cup, and the only major European cup that begins outside the continent: clubs from Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana, Rรฉunion, Mayotte and New Caledonia play their own rounds, and the qualifiers board a plane to play on the mainland in the last sixteen. More than six thousand clubs enter each season, from Paris Saint-Germain to a village side of two thousand inhabitants, which makes it one of the most populous competitions in the world. The draw is unseeded and the lower-division club hosts, so a fifth-tier side can welcome a Champions League finalist onto a municipal pitch - it has happened, and the small club has sometimes won. The final is played at the Stade de France and the winner earns a Europa League place. Matches are played in the French afternoon or evening, on central European time.
