The Jupiler Pro League is Belgium's top division, and no other league in Europe has provoked so much argument about its format. Sixteen clubs play a classic phase, after which the top six enter title play-offs with their points halved - a mechanism that artificially tightens the table and that has been reformed, dropped and reinstated several times. The result is a league where a ten-point lead in March guarantees nothing any more, which exasperates directors as much as it fills grounds. Anderlecht, Club Brugge, Standard Liège and Gent are the big names, and the Topper between Anderlecht and Brugge remains the fixture of the season. The league is also one of Europe's most efficient markets: Belgian clubs buy young, play their signings early and sell high, so every year you see players there on their way to the big five leagues. Matches run from Friday evening to Sunday evening, on central European time.
