The League Cup is England's second national cup, sometimes presented as minor but not to everyone: it is the only genuinely reachable European route for a second-division club, and several modest sides have gone all the way to the final at Wembley. It brings together the ninety-two professional clubs of England - the twenty in the Premier League and the seventy-two below - in a single-match bracket, except for the semi-finals, played over two legs. The big clubs rotate their squads until the quarter-finals, which produces rejuvenated line-ups and September evenings when a teenager makes his debut at Old Trafford. Liverpool hold the record, ahead of Manchester City and Manchester United. The winner earns a place in the Europa Conference League. Matches are played in the British evening, an hour behind central Europe.
