The Championnat National, sometimes listed as Ligue 3, is the third tier of French football, and the most unforgiving of the three. Eighteen clubs play for a handful of places into Ligue 2, which makes every April point heavier here than elsewhere. There are always clubs that have known Ligue 1 and have not finished falling: Le Mans, Châteauroux, Dijon, Boulogne and Bastia SC all have followings far larger than the level suggests. The league's peculiarity is its mixed status - fully professional clubs sit alongside semi-professional structures, with budgets varying tenfold from one team to another. It is also the waiting room of financial recovery: a club sanctioned by the French financial commission can drop here overnight and take years to climb back. Most matches are played on Friday evening, French time.
