The NM Cupen is Norway's national cup, and it holds a place of its own in the calendar: it finishes when everything else has. The Norwegian league runs from April to November, constrained by winter, and the cup final closes it, in Oslo, once the season is already behind. Where European cups deliver their verdict in spring and leave matchdays still to play, this one is the last match of the year - the trophy you lift with nothing left after it. The competition is broadly open, down to regional-league clubs, which produces early-round ties the league could never offer. Matches are played in the late afternoon and evening, central European time, and the long Nordic summer days mean many are still played in broad daylight.
