The Primera B is the second tier of Chilean football, below the Primera División, and it inherits the same impossible geography: around sixteen clubs, from Arica on the Peruvian border down to the rainy south, with journeys measured in flying hours rather than kilometres. Two promotion places are at stake, one for the champion and one decided by a liguilla playoff, while relegation to the Segunda División is automatic. What sets the division apart is that it permanently houses clubs older and more decorated than some in the top flight: Santiago Wanderers of Valparaíso, founded in 1892 and the oldest Chilean club still active, Magallanes, Rangers de Talca, Deportes Concepción and Cobreloa have all spent seasons here. The grounds are modest, often municipal, and the crowd sits close to the pitch.
