The Slovak Cup is the knockout tournament of Slovak football, and it all comes down to one simple rule: one match, not two. There is no second leg, in any round. What the viewer watches is therefore never half a story: what starts in front of them ends in front of them, after extra time and penalties if need be. The loser does not play again. That changes the way teams approach the evening: a lower-division club hosting a big name does not have to hold out twice, it has ninety minutes to hold out. Rounds are played in midweek, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, when the league steps aside. The winner takes a European place, and that is often the shortest route for a club without the means to finish near the top of the table.
