The Svenska Cupen is Sweden's national cup, and its format resembles almost nothing else in Europe: after the opening knockout rounds it goes through a group stage. Thirty-two clubs are drawn into eight groups of four, and only the winner of each group goes on. The effect is real for anyone watching: a club beaten on one matchday is not necessarily out, and the final group games are placement matches rather than sudden death. The competition also straddles two calendar years, while the Swedish league runs from April to November: the knockout rounds fall in the warm months, the groups in February and March, the final in spring. Malmรถ FF are the most successful club as of the 2024 edition. The winner takes a European place, which earns this cup an attention its length might otherwise cost it.
