The Women's European Championship is played every four years in July, and it is the tournament whose scale has changed in front of the people who follow it. The 2022 final at Wembley drew 87,192 spectators, an all-time record for a European Championship match, men's included: the figure is not a statistical curiosity, it changed what federations have dared to schedule since. Sixteen teams have taken part since 2017, with a group stage and then a knockout round, in a host country chosen several years in advance.
