International friendlies are not played when federations decide: they are played when the international calendar allows it. A few windows a year, fixed years in advance, during which clubs must release their players and club football stops almost everywhere. That explains this category's particular rhythm: nothing for weeks, then a hundred or so matches over a few days, all over the world and at every hour. For the viewer, these are the only days when you can watch national teams that would never meet in a competitive fixture, and when a country ranked a hundredth in the world hosts a side fresh from a major tournament. The result counts for nothing, but what you see counts for what comes next.
